Weather, rain radar and mountain weather
Mostly forecasts your place and says how sure it is. The place and mountain pages lead to every town and summit Mostly writes a forecast of its own for.
How Mostly forecasts
A forecast is not a single number. Weather services run the same model many times with slightly different starting values – an ensemble. Mostly takes the ensemble runs of the German Weather Service’s ICON model and shows their spread as a blue band around the temperature curve.
When the runs stay close together, the outlook is clear. When they drift apart, Mostly says so instead of pretending to a precision the day does not have. Under every forecast it names the source that computed it and when.
What you will find here
The cockpit shows the current conditions, 48 hours and ten days for any place, along with official warnings, the rain radar and the moon phase. Places can be saved and stay on your device.
More than a hundred towns in Austria, Germany and Switzerland have pages of their own. Nearly three hundred peaks and passes get mountain weather by altitude, with the freezing level and, in season, the official avalanche bulletin, and more than forty lakes in Austria and Bavaria show their measured water temperature.
Where the data comes from
The forecast comes from the ICON model via Open-Meteo. If a source fails, GeoSphere Austria’s AROME, MET Norway, Apple Weather, the German Weather Service and finally Google step in, and Mostly names the substitute. Warnings appear in the wording of GeoSphere Austria, the German Weather Service and MeteoAlarm, avalanche bulletins in that of the responsible warning services.
Water temperatures are measured, not forecast: they come from the regional hydrographic services and carry their gauge and time. The radar shows what European weather radars are measuring right now.
